in “Bunya Bunya” Chaucer Street, St Kilda, Victoria, Australia. Elizabeth was
the daughter of Matthew Gardiner and Sarah Frost.
John Heyliger Dewhurst qualified with B.A. at
Worcester College in Oxford, England on 17 November 1831, and Ordained as a
Church of England Vicar on 13 January 1833.
John was appointed to Layer-de-la-Haye, Essex, England from 1845-1868 where 5 of their
children were born. Rev John Heyliger
Dewhurst was appointed to St Phillip’s Collingwood, Melbourne 1872 – 1883. A stained glass window was installed at St
Phillip’s Church in his memory after his death. After the Church was demolished
the window was relocated to the Church at the Folk Museum in Swan Hill,
Victoria.

Matthew Gardiner Dewhurst had a Grain business in Ballarat. Sources indicate he took to drink and lost the business, then moved to Hawthorn. They lived at 80 Liddiard St, Burwood and also at Russels Lane, Auburn. Katie started the kiosk at Auburn railway station after they moved to Melbourne from Ballarat and ran it for many years.
